How is it possible for a presidential candidate to win the popular vote but lose the electoral vote?

The big day is coming up! Everyone is fixated on the electoral college but I’d like to know what you predict for the popular vote?

How exactly does the whole thing work. Last night I was keeping track of the polls and I saw that as soon as Obama’s electoral votes exceeded 270 they stated that he was our 44th US president, yet four states had not turned their votes in.
Does the popular vote not count, therefore does our vote not count??
I am very confused about the whole thing and just want a better understanding about how it all works.

I know that this happened to Al gore but im not sure how this works. Whats the difference between an electoral vote and popular vote? What is an electoral vote?

I don’t really understand how voting works. How long until we know whose won the popular vote and how long until we know whose going to be president?

If electoral votes are the only ones that count. I always say I am more than I novice when it comes to politics but if delegates were the only thing that mattered for the DNC why have a popular vote?

sorry im british and not an expert in US politics, but i read that in the popular vote Obama had 61million compared to mccain 54 million, but in electoral vote Obama had 364 compared to McCain 174. How comes there is such a bigger margin in electoral vote? And what is electoral vote?

And on the other hand the electoral college vote but not the popular vote.

Im doing election stuff in TX History. Theres a question in my homework packet that asks how many electoral and popular votes these make believe people have. And i just don’t get it.

I have been looking for the popular vote total and have not been able to find the popular vote total for all of the primaries, and what I have found so far is that, with all the states that have released the popular vote total for their primaries, Clinton is leading 17,160,167 votes to Obama’s 16,804,164.
Has anyone found anything that contradicts this?
