Most American children do not learn how to play an instrument at school anymore due to many schools having to eliminate music programs from their curriculum.  In recent years, however, a rising number of young children and teenagers want to learn how to play instruments like acoustic guitars, keyboard, electric guitars, singing and drums for kids.  This new interest has been influenced by the several different video games out there that mimic singing, musical bands and playing guitar and other instruments.

Some of the first video games that came out that were about performing musically were ones that involved singing.  Many of them requires having a special microphone to hook up to the game console and then you could pick a song to sing to usually in a karaoke -like technique.  The most popular ones were the kind that copied popular singing shows like American Idol.  You could create yourself into a video contestant and then sing before a panel of judges and a large crowd.  Your performance was then followed by the critic of how well you did.  You actually had to learn how to sing on key and to follow the song, or you would perform poorly.  Due to these types of games, more kids than ever now want to take singing lessons because they enjoyed singing through their video game so much.

The next popular video game that came out that has increased the interest in kids   wanting to learn an instrument is the game Guitar hero.  This game comes with a real looking electric guitar that attaches to the game unit and has buttons on it that are color coded.  In order to play the correct note, you must press the correct color button when it shows up on the screen.  For beginners it has some slower easier numbers to get the hang of it and the speed and difficulty increase with the higher levels.  This is a fun way for someone who does not know how to play guitar to feel like a real guitar playing rock star.  Because so many teenagers have liked this game so much, they have been showing up for guitar lessons at a record rate since the debut of this video game.

The last great game that was created to join the other musically influenced video games is called Rock band.  This takes the same idea as the American Idol one and the Guitar hero game and put it all together with a complete rock bands with a singer, drummer, guitar player and a keyboarder.  Because so many games only accommodate one or two participants at a time, this has been a great one for a group of friends to do all together. This has made teenagers to want to learn all of the various instruments featured in this game.

Many parents do not like the fact that their kids play so many video games but the fact that some of these have encouraged many of them to learn how to play a musical instrument is a great thing.

As parents we are always seeking new ideas and ways of promoting healthy development skills in our children. For years studies have shown that children who actively partake in musical education have developed faster and more effective skills in a variety of areas. I’m on a mission. To convert.

To convert guitar players and aspiring guitar players to open-D. It’s the tuning so important to guitar in the last number of decades, but too often, so overlooked by the mainstream. Standard tuning has a stranglehold on the business of learning guitar. The reason, to me, remains unclear.

As a starting point, an open tuning is clearly the logical choice. What easier way to begin to play guitar, but with an open, major chord? How much more confidence could an aspiring guitarist (of any age, but more on that later) need than to be able to play a nice sounding chord without putting finger to fret? That’s what you get when you start with an open tuning.

My personal story went like this. Frustrated novice guitar player (“novice” for years on end!). Gets nowhere with guitar for years. Does research (i.e. reads guitar magazines). Realizes many of the greats played in alternate tunings (K. Richard, J. Mitchell, E. James, R. Johnson, R. Cooder, J. Page, etc, etc.). Re-tunes guitar until he finds one that works – open-D. Presto! Light bulb comes on, a better guitar player is hatched.

Open tunings are mentioned, frequently enough, in magazines articles, transcriptions, books and the like. But very seldom or never have I seen an outright promotion of their use as a stand-alone approach to guitar (my god, even Keith switches to standard tuning every now and again!). And open-D, the most logical of all starting points, is rarely mentioned at all. I have yet, in 20+ years of public performance, have anyone come up to me and say – “How about that – you play just like I do, in open-D”. People do come up, but the comments are almost always, “You sure use some funny chord positions” or “Are you playing in a different tuning”. Amazingly, many guitar players associate “open tuning” with “more difficult”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sure, to make the transition from standard tuning is a bit of a learning curve, but once you’re there, POW! You’ll never want to play any other way (although just adding proficiency on an open tuning to your standard tuning is a giant leap).

Which brings us back to beginners. No matter what the age, a beginner, whether 6 or 60 years old will find open-D an easier way to start playing guitar. It is so obvious. Focus on the strum without any fingers on the fretboard, and then work your way up to one finger on the fretboard (the basic major chord in open-D is just one finger). What a way to develop early confidence. The truth is, and I am living proof, you would never have to make the flip to standard tuning. But if you wanted to, it’s just small tweak up to standard – sort of drop-D tuning with three other minor adjustments back and forth, to and from standard E A D G B E, to D A D F# D.

One question that arises – why open-D, then, of all the potential starting points? The absolute simplest choice may be, for easier understanding of theory, keys and harmony might be open-C C G C E G C, but that gets a tad floppy sounding, as the guitar strings are so slackened. Going the other way to open-E E B E G# B E might be going too far the other way, though it’s used. Open-D seems the perfect choice! For singers wanting to accompany themselves, of course, it becomes an issue of vocal range tied to the guitar tuning. A capo may be in order.

I’m such a fervent believer in open-D, I’ve written a book – Guitar-eze A Simpler Approach to Playing Guitar, with a companion Chord Book, as well as a website and a blog dedicated to helping guitarists and aspiring guitarists see the light. Who knows? Maybe some day open-D will be known as “standard tuning”.

We all have a few of those childhood dreams that fell to the wayside as we grew up. We were either too busy or too involved in something else or were too poor or just kept forgetting about it. It doesn’t matter why we never learned to play the instruments that we wanted to, what matters is that now that we’re adults, are we going to learn to play the musical instruments we dreamed of?  While shopping for the musical instruments of our dreams, we keep running across the “learn to play” instruments and book sets. They look like they were probably designed for kids, but the instruments look like they are almost high quality enough to get away with playing. So can anyone really learn to play a musical instrument from the “learn to play” series?  To be honest, those who learned to play at least one musical instrument as a child most likely can learn to play another musical instrument form the “learn to play” series provided we at least learned the basics of reading music. Being able to at least read the basic scale from sheet music will help tremendously when trying to learn to plat a musical instrument from a book. Some people do very well learning to play musical instruments from a book, but the people who do very well all have one thing in common, they are self learners. Those of us who were born in the mid to late seventies and beyond grew up in a system of education that everything was handfed to us, thus the majority of us do not learn very well on our own. We need someone to hold our hands and teach us note by note to play a musical instrument, not to mention trying to learn other things. Learning to play a musical instrument from a book requires a certain amount of self teaching ability. Without the ability to “figure things out along the way,” learning to play a musical instrument from a book will prove to be quite frustrating, although it can most certainly be done. If our desire is strong enough and our patience can run fairly deep, then yes, we can learn to play a musical instrument from a book. There are few things quite as satisfying as accomplishing something like the challenge of learning to play a musical instrument from a book. As we learn to play any musical instrument without the guidance of someone else, just like kids, our confidence grows. For adults, learning to play a musical instrument from a book may very well be the realization of a childhood dream, and there’s nothing but pure magic in that.
