I am doing a project for a charity and will be covering a popular song that was recorded in the early 70′s. I would like the song to be available for download/purchase online. All profit from the song will be donated to this particular charity. What is the process that I would have to go through to gain certain rights to cover this song? What about downloads? All help would be appreciated it!

I know a few technical things about jazz music but I’ve mostly listened and collected it according to how I emotionally feel about it. Are there books that might help me learn more about the technical side of jazz so I can appreciate the music more deeply? So I would know why a solo is really interesting or why some interactions between musicians is significant.
